This past summer I was thrilled to take a course with Farida S Irani from Australia. Farida is a holistic health practitioner, an Ayurveda practitioner, a clinical Aromatherapist, and a senior Bowenwork instructor and practitioner. She pioneered Ayurveda Aromatherapy and developed Bowtech Ease, an Ayurveda aromatherapy blend that complements Bowen Therapy work. Farida brought together so many of my interests in one weekend: Bowen Therapy, Yoga and Ayurveda, and my newest love, essential oils.
I was first introduced to Ayurveda through yoga. Ayurveda, which means Science of Life, is the ancient science of Indian medicine that focuses on balance in all of life. It is a comprehensive approach to physical and spiritual well-being and uses aromatics, diet, herbs, meditation, exercise, yoga, and even cosmetics to restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit.
In Ayurveda, we talk a lot about the doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha), the three biological elements that make up your constitution. We have all three and they are always fluctuating in the body. Optimum health is achieved when the doshas are in balance. When we have too much or not enough of a dosha, our health can suffer. Through Ayurveda practices, we can help balance the doshas. Bowen Therapy can also help balance the doshas.
New to me was the Ayurveda concept of marmas. Marmas are vital energy points in the body - we have 107 of them, many located in the feet, head, and neck. What is truly fascinating to me is that so many of the Bowen Therapy moves we do are either on or very close to these vital energy centers!
Also fascinating to me is how Bowen Therapy can address the chakras. Chakras are described as energy vortexes located from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. In yoga, we often talk about how illness and disease develop in a chakra before manifesting in the physical body. The basic Bowen relaxation procedures can help balance all of the chakras and other more targeted procedures can affect specific chakras. I see this happen regularly in my Bowen practice where I do a lot of work that affects the root, heart, and throat chakras.
